FAQ

  1. Why can’t you just stop?
Trich, along with almost any other habit or disorder is not something that can just be “stopped.” It’s not the puller’s fault that they even started. Some people may be able to stop pulling for a period of time, some maybe forever. Most pullers are working hard every day to reduce pulling. Pulling is something that whether you like it or not, is in you. But then...it is not to say that you can’t stop! With hard work it can be done!
  1. Is it a disease?
Nope, just an obsessive-compulsive type behavior.
  1. Is it curable?
No one has a “for-sure” cure yet, though many people find treatments that either reduce or stop their pulling. Read more in the TREATMENT and STRATEGIES page.
  1. Is it contagious?
No, but possibly genetic, the genetic field in Trich is new and not very well studied yet.
  1. Will the hair always grow back?
Read about hair in the HAIR page!
  1. Is is genetic?
Unfortunately, no major or worth while studies have been done to prove that Trich is a genetic disorder. There are definitely possibilities, and some pullers have relatives that pull also.
  1. Doesn’t it hurt?
To most people who pull, the sensation you get when you pull out the hair doesn’t bother them, or hurt. For some, it “feels good,” and they may even pull just to receive the “tingling” sensation.
  1. Why don’t more people know about it?
Many people who have Trich may not even know what they have. Because the studies on Trich are so new...most therapists, doctors, etc...that have been trained haven’t learned about it. Pulling is also a very personal thing, so it’s unique to find a person that shares their problem with the world. Today though, more and more people are becoming aware, especially in the medical field, so we need to keep up the good work! Also, “Trich Awareness Week” is an event held by TLC annually for pullers to educate others all over the US. We need to continue to inform the world about this puzzling disorder, to better help us all!
